OVERVIEW

This New Hampshire house by Smart Architecture features two main gable roof volumes flanked by thin, flat roofs that splay outward in every direction.

The Duragutter SQ and TL profiles were selected for their ability to add a straight, crisp, and thin edge to the roofline.

Left: Duragutter's modern gutter profiles accent the lines on this mountain-view modern house. Right: The TL gutter's thin profile creates a perfectly straight line.

THE CHALLENGE

The roofline is a defining feature on this house, and the gutter system needed to compliment the deep cantilevers and slender roof edge.

The gable roofs required a gutter that could drain out of the end to hide the downspouts inside the parapet walls.

Sheet metal was ruled out because of the frequent joints and waviness that is inevitable with thin metal.

THE SOLUTION

The SQ — our standard box gutter profile — was selected for the gable roofs to provide a crisp, minimal transition from roof to wall. Custom outlets were fabricated to drain the gutter from the end and conceal the downspouts within the parapet wall.

The TL profile — a thinner, elongated version of the SQ profile — was used on the cantilevered flat roofs to emphasize their horizontality and create a sharp, defining line between building and sky.

Left: The TL profile maintains the horizontal emphasis of the patio roof. Right: the SQ profile creates a neat, defined transition between roof and wall.
