The Coastal Estate
CASE STUDY
Smooth curves and rake miters on an oceanside New England home — two details impossible with standard gutters.

OVERVIEW
A coastal New England home by Cummings Architecture + Interiors required gutters that could achieve two details impossible with standard products: seamless curves and clean miters into flared rake trim.
Duragutter was selected for its ability to be bent to almost any radius without faceting, and for the OG-5 profile's capacity to miter directly into the rake molding — replicating a historic wood gutter detail in maintenance-free extruded aluminum.

Images, left to right: The shingle style residence features a curved, wraparound porch that looks out to the ocean view. The OG-5 gutter miters into a flared rake molding, integrating the gutter with the exterior trim. The gutter follows the gentle curve of the porch roof.
THE CHALLENGE
Curved gutters are typically achieved by cutting and joining short, faceted sections. The elegant lines of this house required fair curves.
The gutter-to-rake miter had historically only been achievable with wood gutters. However, the joint was difficult to seal and would fail over time. Wood gutters also have very low capacity due to their 1" thickness.
THE SOLUTION
Duragutter can be bent to exact radii, enabling the gutter to complement — not detract from — the beautiful curves on this house.
Duragutter's OG profiles are exact replicas of traditional wood gutter profiles, enabling them to miter into the same rake molding at a range of roof pitches. The joint between the gutter and the rake molding is sealed with a PVC plug, eliminating the failure point. Due to the strength of 1/8" thick extruded aluminum, Duragutter profiles hold twice the volume of water as wood gutters.
